"We are made of words, dreams and a little bit of reality"... Christine Orban
Lucie Lith's work falls within the realm of contemporary figurative painting, where colors and words intertwine, built up through successive layers of stencils.
In the beginning, there were words
A self-taught artist, Lucie Lith has devoted herself fully to painting since 2015, although creativity has been a part of her life since childhood. Her artistic journey began with writing poems and novels, before she discovered collage in 2008. Gradually, her work evolved towards more complex creations, combining reworked, printed, cut and torn images with painting and text.
The union of writing and painting
In 2016, she embraced urban art techniques, using spray paint and creating her own stencils to which she added text. The marriage of words and paint then became central to her artistic approach. Letters are integrated into the characters and the setting to compose a face, reveal a thought, or illustrate an attitude. The emphasis is on each person's story, the experiences that shape us and define who we are. We are made up of the accumulation of our stories, and nothing is ever truly erased.
Lucie Lith's paintings combine acrylics, pens, brushes, and spray paint, as well as dozens of layers of stencils that she destroys once the work is complete. Each painting is unique, like each story. The characters are made up of an amalgamation of words that intertwine and overlap, some letters escaping into the background. The colors intertwine to reveal deliberately deconstructed subjects, symbolizing the imperfection of the world while simultaneously conveying a hopeful unity. Sometimes, a text or poem accompanies the painting.
A plural practice with one common thread: the words
Since 2020, Lucie Lith has also offered limited-edition digital prints on fine art paper or Dibond. These artworks extend her artistic approach by exploring other narrative forms.
She also develops personalized creations from photographs, transforming them into unique keepsakes imbued with emotion and story.
To Challenge and Question
Each of Lucie Lith's artworks is born from the desire to tell a story, to challenge the viewer, and to leave room for the imagination. Through words and images, her work explores memory, the traces left by experiences, and the role of writing in a world increasingly dominated by immediate and ephemeral images.
